How to Get Further in Your Health Administration Career

Health administration is a wide sector, and it encompasses plenty of options for anyone who might be interested in this kind of career. It’s also the kind of career that allows for a lot of progression, but there are things you’ll need to do before that can happen – it’s not something that will usually just fall into your lap, and there’s some hard work involved to get where you want to go. However, if this is the career you’re interested in and you enjoy the work, all that effort will definitely be worth it when you see how far you’ve come. With that in mind, here are some ways you can get further in your health administration career to ensure you’re off on the right track.

Get Qualifications

It’s possible to get into the career of health administration without specific qualifications (although you’ll certainly need soft skills, which we’ll go into later on), but if you want to progress and get further, you’ll need to add more certificates and qualifications to your resume. The good news is there are lots to choose from, and once you know what direction you want your career to go in, you’ll know what courses to take and what qualifications you’ll need.

A good example is RCFE administrator certification. This can help you when it comes to working in healthcare administration and specifically in nursing homes and care homes. If that’s your goal, it’s wise to look into how to get this qualification and ensure you have it before you start looking for jobs that require it. An employer may well believe that you’re working towards this qualification, but until you actually have it and pass all the tests and checks, it’s unlikely you’ll be hired.

Improve Your Soft Skills

Certification, qualifications, and understanding the job you’re doing and what’s expected of you are crucial when it comes to working in healthcare administration, especially if you want to get further and really go far in your career. However, there are other skills that are just as important and shouldn’t be ignored; they’re known as ‘soft skills’, and even if you’ve not heard the term before, you’ll definitely know what at least some (and ideally all) of those skills are.

Some of the soft skills you’ll need to do well in healthcare administration include organizational skills, good communication, good time-keeping, leadership skills, and meticulous attention to detail. Remember, this kind of job isn’t just about keeping things running in a shipshape and orderly fashion, but it’s about people’s lives and their health, so it’s vital to know what to do and how to do it well.

You’ll pick up a lot of these soft skills as you go, or at least learn how to improve them, but it’s worth thinking about what you might not be so good at and where you might need to improve – you can find ways to boost your soft skills, and if you want to get further in your career, that’s definitely something you’ll need to do. Something that will be useful in whatever sector you happen to work in, but particularly in healthcare administration (because rules and regulations change all the time), is to keep learning so you’re always up to date with the latest regulations, technology, and procedures. In this way, you’ll be able to implement changes in the way you work or how your team functions, and you’ll be able to ensure the patients in your care are treated the right way.

More than this, though, if you want to get further in your career, staying up to date is crucial. Firstly, it means you’ll have the most recent qualifications, as we mentioned above, and that’s vital because it’s exactly what a potential employer is going to want to see. As well as this, staying on top of all the changes in your sector, even if you don’t need new qualifications, shows any employer that you care about the industry and you’re interested in where it’s going – plus it shows them that you want to progress in your career, and they’ll be keen to help you with that if they know their efforts won’t be under-appreciated or even entirely go to waste.

Make Clear Goals

The healthcare administration sector is a vast one with lots of different career paths you might want to take, and that can mean when it comes to progressing in your career, you end up going nowhere. It doesn’t happen because that’s your choice exactly, but because you’re confused about what your options are, and, in the end, it can feel easier and more comfortable just to stay where you are, even if it means not progressing at all.

When you’ve got good, clear goals to work towards, you’ll be a lot more focused on what you’re doing, and it will make decisions a lot easier because you’ll know where you need to end up, helping you choose the right path.
